How Pilots Maintain 20/20 Vision Health

By Robert Corter

Engines are tuned up once in every 6 months and we lubricate the hinges and gears of machines. What about your body? Do you place enough attention and maintenance to one of your most important and delicate organ – the eyes? The eyes are your windows to the world and they also need maintenance especially when your job calls for extra sharp vision like a hawk’s.

Drivers most need their sense of sight in order to avoid accidents. Just like other drivers, pilots need to maintain a perfect vision. The term 20/20 vision is used to describe a normal, healthy vision. Individuals having problems with the eyesight have a higher 2nd number. If a person has a 20/40 vision, it means that this person can clearly see objects 20 ft away what a person with healthy vision sees from 40 feet. In the US, a person that is legally blind has a vision of 20/200. There are also people who have vision higher than average such as 20/10.

It is important for pilots to have a perfect sense of sight because he carries with him plenty of lives, which could easily be lost in times of accidents. Here are some ways on how pilots maintain 20/20 vision health.

Avoid direct exposure to radiation such as sunlight. How pilots maintain 20/20 vision health can be challenging especially when they are exposed to flying at different times of the day. When flying at daytime, people should wear protective eyewear in order to avoid having radiation to hit the eyes directly. Radiation can burn the cornea and bring damage to the delicate parts of the eyes such as the retina and lens. Too much exposure to radiation can increase a person’s risk for eye disorders such as cataract.

Avoid smoking. Cigarettes contain more than 4000 chemicals that can damage the body including the eyes. These substances can specifically damage the most delicate parts of the eyes known as the macula. When the cells of the macula die, the eyes can be permanently damaged.

As much as possible, read only in well-lighted rooms. Just as too much exposure to light can do damage to the eyes, using the eyes in poorly lit rooms can also harm your sense of sight. Be sure that you don’t place too much strain on your eyes by resting them once they get tired, especially after reading or after using the computer.

Watch your diet. This is probably the best way how pilots maintain 20/20 vision health. The best way to take care of the eyes is to take care of the body as a whole. Watching what you eat can help a lot in eliminating unhealthy food choices that can aggravate or trigger eye disorders. Always consume fresh fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins A and E known to do wonders to the eyes. Antioxidants such as lutein can be found in green leafy vegetables like spinach are also very useful in maintaining good health of the eyes. Some medical conditions also trigger eye damage and even blindness. One common example of this is diabetes.
