Is This The Best Mortal Kombat Has To Offer?

Mortal Kombat has been a popular game for a long time, since the day i first laid eyes on the Arcade game in the early 1990’s through to its release on the cinema and subsequent Television series Mortal Kombat has been one of those games that when i think of renowned and common games, it is one of the first games which leap to mind(others being The Tekken Series, Street Fighter, and Madden Series) yes i noticed a theme there too, 3 of those 4 games are violent games(hmmm…no it doesnt say something about me?!)

It has had a multitude of releases since then, featuring on many major platforms under various different names but its most recent release simply came out as Mortal Kombat, although others may refer to it as Mortal Kombat 9 or Mortal Kombat 2011.

So lets get started on my review of the game on the Playstation 3! I received this game through a game price comparison website and the game is great fun to play! And thanks to the options which allow you to practise and learn all those great moves it is actually an uncomplicated game to pick up, you can get pretty good at this game within a couple of days even if you haven’t played any other game for months! Playing a friend or sibling makes it even more fun(and heated too!) as you battle with each other and try to finish each other off in the most horrible way possible. My only slight concern, and i say this as someone who is a fan of horror movies and all things spooky, is that the fatalities may have gone just a little overboard, Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe didnt contain all this blood and gore and was in my opinion a much better game. It is definetly a game for people over the age of 18 as it states on the box but then again you could argue it is a plus point because it is precisely for that reason the game made major headlines back in the early 1990’s.

The gameplay itself is very good, i used the official PS3 controller and thats what i would recommend here, any controller with distinct separate buttons will be fine. I didnt experience any problems when trying out new moves or when i needed to throw in a quick combo to hit my foe because we all know how annoying it can be when you’re getting slapped from all corners and that super special move you’ve been waiting for just doesnt come off! The Kratos character makes a great addition to the game but truth be told, when you have super cool characters like Sub Zero then Kratos looks pretty plain in comparison. There are a wide range of characters in the game, 27 in all including the original favourites and backbone of the Mortal Kombat line so there is plenty of variety but for those of you who have played preceding Mortal Kombat games, we have most likely already decided upon a favourite player we almost always use!(especially in a grudge match with friends)

The graphics are to expected for a game on the ps3, not anything out of the ordinary but not something which will make you run from the screen either. The characters are all clearly distinct and theres no sluggishness and the background is nice and clear too. I do however really like the graphics when the x-ray vision attack is being performed, very sharp!

With all beat ’em up games, the sound effects help create a user experience to really feel drawn in, theres not much better than the sound effect of a great combo being used on a foe and listening to them squeal for sheer pain! Mortal Kombat does possess impressive sound for the fighting, in all honesty i hardly noticed the background music which to me indicates it is neither good nor bad.

Its not a game i would like playing by myself, i need to be playing with someone to really take in the experience of Mortal Kombat, if you have someone or a group of friends to play with then this game can provide alot of entertainment. If its just you then i’d really suggest taking this game online and finding someone else to play!

All in all i would say if you are a Mortal Kombat follower or you love playing fighting games then this game is a great selection(not as good as Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe and not as good as the Tekken Series in my opinion). But if you aren’t sure and looking for a review which persuades you to go out and purchase the game then i would say leave this game behind, you will be better off purchasing something else. The game will provide enjoyment for beat ’em up fans and fans of the Mortal Kombat chain but i fail to see anything in the game which will convince the average gamer to buy this game, not even the amount of blood on show!
