Web Design – The Beginner\’s Introduction

Web design has become an art form unto itself, and like any other craft, successful web designing requires a frank appraisal of the current market and popular styles. First and foremost, successful web design will focus on the usability of the website over bells and whistles, graphics and GIFs, and this means designing the website for users. The art form of web design has become a full-fledged market, complete with statistics and surveys to better discover the secrets to successful designing. The current consensus is that the user interface for websites should be little difference from the principles guiding the presentation of retail stores, in that users – or \’customers\’, only approach things that are designed to catch their eye and simplify their experience. Common sense might dictate that websites be designed with the latest in graphics and animated interfaces, but in this case common sense conflicts with the consensus: users regularly click on clear, concise and low-tech links.

A customer walking into a large retail store does not take in the entirety of the store, but rather the color scheme, layout and the general presentation of front-facing items; similarly, a person browsing websites is not expected to explore the entirety of any given website, but will react instead to the basics of the website, especially the layout of its front page. Internet users can websites to decide their browsing habits – they do not read line by line, graphic by graphic, and as a result websites must be designed to guide them through content as plainly as possible.

Users are also notoriously impatient online, as the entire web market has centered itself around instant gratification. The only exception to the rule comes from websites with notable content: as a customer may go out of their way to purchase a high quality item regardless of the appearance of the store, so too will websites with quality content enjoy plenty of traffic even if they are poorly designed, scattered with advertisements and error-prone flash animations. Otherwise, users generally rely on their intuitions when browsing websites, and web designs must tailor to those intuitions so that potential traffic is not turned away by rookie mistakes.

Websites should be designed with mind for the fickle browser – all it takes is a bad advertisement, pop-up or poorly designed layout to turn such users away. In this way the layout of webpage designs must coordinate the necessary information up front and on top, as information that\’s specified at the bottom of the page, requiring the user to scroll down, will soon become missed information. Web design should focus on creating website content that\’s as obvious and self-explanatory as possible, and that includes any given site\’s navigational layout. The less energy and action users have to use in order to explore the website and test any site related services, the better, and that means websites offering a service should be designed to include minimal obligations before users can enter into that service. It\’s recommended that service centric websites be designed with name, password and email requirements only, as unnecessary forms obligating users to explain how they found the website, where they live, and in what time zone, turn users off at an alarming rate.

The name of the game is convenience, and the most successful website designs treat their layout like an art palette, understanding how to draw the eye towards the necessary content without filling the layout in distracting and costly graphics. Don\’t be fooled by hosts and designers who offer inexpensive and plentiful ways to populate your website with graphics and animations: simple designs are still the most prominent ones featured on successful high-traffic websites.
